If you're looking for a feel-good movie with great music and an uplifting storyline that will deepen your understanding of Indian culture, then Salaam Namaste is the film for you. It is primarily in English but also has some Hindi and Punjabi. This comedy-drama revolves around two Westerners who travel to India to find their birth parents and kids. They meet an Indian woman whose deceased husband had walked out on her and her three children, all girls with mental disabilities. The abandoned mother wants nothing more than to keep her daughters in their custom-made home, which makes them very happy despite their difficulties living in this world. The two kids have a very special connection with the rest of the family. In fact, they often communicate telepathically with one another. The Indian woman, though she is initially skeptical at first, comes to care for these kids as much as she cares for her own under-privileged children. In the end, the two friends realize that they must move forward in their lives and return to America without the girls and their mother. The former will go on to work at a software company and has his own apartment and office space; the latter will become a lawyer who also has her own office space and vehicle so she can take care of her new charges. The Indian woman's favorite song is the title track, which is played during the end credits. It is sung by her daughter (Aarti Chhabria) and son (Sumeet Raghavan), who play the two young siblings in the film. It also features their mother (Aishwarya Rai) lip-syncing to it; she has a beautiful voice. The song compares our everyday troubles with the plight of an Indian woman who was forced to leave her country for England, where she met and fell in love with an English man. They get married and have three kids, one of whom has Down's Syndrome. The man, however, begins to show signs of not wanting to care for his family anymore. He eventually leaves one day and comes home with an English woman who is quite different from the first wife; he then converts to Christianity. Despite her hardships, she still loves her husband and wants him back in her life. She wants the kids to be like him and tries to get them into a prestigious educational school in London. The English woman does not want this to happen because she knows that the kids would most likely excel in this environment. The title song then goes on to say that we should never lose hope that our wishes might come true one way or another, no matter how impossible they might seem at times. Alone in a World, a song about an Indian woman's son, whose brother has gone missing, is also featured. The Indian woman's granddaughter from the second marriage later becomes a doctor and works at a hospital specializing in brain surgery. She falls in love with a man named Francis and they get married. A chance encounter with an uncle who has just arrived from India starts a chain of events that takes them to Nepal where they meet the Indian woman again. The film won eight awards including Best Feature Film at the Zee South Asian International Film Awards 2014 and was also nominated for Best Feature Film at the Jaipur International Film Festival 2014. cfa1e77820
